Osteoporosis develops silently. There’s no pain, no obvious symptom, no warning sign, often the first indication is a fracture from a fall that shouldn’t have caused one. That’s why bone density testing matters, and why two names tend to come up when people start looking into it: DEXA and Bindex.

Both measure bone health. Both can flag your risk of osteoporosis. But they work very differently, and understanding those differences helps you choose the right starting point for your own bone health journey.

What is a DEXA scan?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the traditional, hospital-based method of measuring bone mineral density. It uses two low-dose X-ray beams to scan your spine and hip, comparing the results against those of a healthy young adult to produce what’s known as a T-score.

DEXA is widely regarded as the gold standard for a formal osteoporosis diagnosis, and for good reason, it’s precise, well-established, and the benchmark against which most other bone density technologies are measured. A T-score of -1.0 or above is considered normal, between -1.0 and -2.5 indicates osteopenia (early bone thinning), and -2.5 or below indicates osteoporosis.

The radiation dose is very low, typically less than you’d absorb from a long-haul flight, but a DEXA scan usually requires a hospital or imaging centre referral, an appointment booked in advance, and a wait for formal results. On the NHS, access depends on GP referral and NICE eligibility criteria; privately, scans in the UK generally cost from around £189 to £250.

What is a Bindex Bone Scan?

Bindex® takes a different approach. Rather than X-rays, it uses safe ultrasound technology to measure the cortical thickness of your shinbone (tibia), the dense outer layer of bone that thins as bone density declines. Combined with your personal clinical risk factors, this measurement produces a highly accurate estimate of your bone mineral density and osteoporosis risk, with 90% sensitivity compared to DEXA.

Because there’s no radiation involved, Bindex is repeatable as often as needed, making it well suited to regular monitoring rather than a one-off diagnostic snapshot. The scan itself takes just a few seconds; the full appointment (consultation, scan, and results discussion) takes around 30 minutes, with nothing to book in advance beyond your appointment time.

So, which bone scan do you need?

They’re not really competitors, they serve different purposes. Bindex is an excellent screening tool: fast, safe, and accessible, ideal for regular monitoring and for catching early warning signs before they become a problem. DEXA remains the reference standard for a formal diagnosis, and if your Bindex result comes back in the amber or red category, we’ll talk you through whether a confirmatory DEXA scan or GP referral is the right next step.

Bindex screening is worth considering if you fall into any of the following groups: women approaching or past menopause, anyone with a family history of osteoporosis or a previous fragility fracture, older adults wanting regular monitoring as bone mass naturally declines, people on medications known to affect bone density, athletes tracking skeletal load, or anyone taking rapid-acting weight loss medication such as GLP-1s, which can accelerate bone density loss. It’s equally suited to anyone simply taking a proactive approach to long-term health.

Booking a Bindex Bone Density scan at Soma House

A Bone Density Scan with Bindex® at Soma House in High Wycombe, takes around 30 minutes from start to finish. We begin with a consultation covering your medical history, lifestyle, and any relevant risk factors. A small amount of gel is applied to your shin, and the Bindex sensor takes its reading in a matter of seconds, no undressing, no imaging table, nothing uncomfortable. Your results are calculated instantly and talked through with you there and then, along with a personalised plan if one’s needed, whether that’s lifestyle adjustments, restorative bone therapies (such as PEMF therapy), a referral back to your GP, or further investigation via DEXA.

*This scan provides a screening and risk assessment. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and a registered healthcare provider should always be consulted for formal medical advice and diagnostic conclusions regarding osteoporosis.*
